Free AI Thumbnail Generator Template: Copy, Fill, Ship

Rafay Korai · 5 min read · 2026-11-04

The blank page is the slowest part of making a cover. This post gives you a template that removes it: a short form you fill in, and a request you paste into your AI thumbnail generator. A filled example sits beside each part so you can see what good looks like.

Copy it, keep it in a note on your computer, and reuse it for every video.

Fill in six lines, paste them into your tool, and check the result against a five point list before you upload.

The template follows the routine in Lesson 3.6: make a cover in under three minutes, write four to six words, keep your look, make three versions. The full walk through is here: Thumbnails and covers with no designer.

Part 1: The cover form

Copy this and fill it in. The example is for an imaginary plumber's channel and is made up to show the format.

FieldYour answerExample
Video titleHow to stop a tap dripping
The one ideaYou can fix most drips with one cheap part
Words on cover (4 to 6)Fix it in 10 minutes
ViewerHome owners, not plumbers
Subject and positionHand holding a tap, left third
Platform and shapeYouTube, 16:9

A note on the example: "Fix it in 10 minutes" promises a time. Only use a promise like that if the video truly shows it. YouTube asks that titles accurately represent the video, because misled viewers may stop watching, and the cover should be held to the same standard.

Part 2: Your cover rules

Fill this in once, and paste it into every request.

  1. ColoursTwo colours, by name or code. Example: dark green and white.
  2. Font styleOne style. Example: bold, plain sans serif.
  3. Text positionAlways the same side. Example: right.
  4. Subject positionAlways the same side. Example: left third.
  5. BackgroundOne type. Example: plain, slightly blurred workshop.
  6. AvoidThings you never want. Example: no tiny text, no more than one face, no logos that are not mine.

YouTube's tips suggest that you apply the rule of thirds, then overlay branding and descriptive text, and use a font that is easy to read. That is why the example puts the subject on the left third and the text on the right.

Part 3: The AI thumbnail generator request

Copy and paste this, replacing the brackets:

Make three [16:9] covers for a video called "[title]". Subject: [subject and position]. Text: "[words]", placed [side], large and easy to read. Look: [colours], [font style], [background]. Avoid: [avoid list]. Make the three versions differ in [two things, for example the expression and the text size]. Leave space around the text.

The example, filled in:

Make three 16:9 covers for a video called "How to stop a tap dripping". Subject: a hand holding a tap, left third. Text: "Fix it in 10 minutes", placed right, large and easy to read. Look: dark green and white, bold plain sans serif, plain slightly blurred workshop. Avoid: tiny text, more than one face. Make the three versions differ in the angle of the tap and the text size. Leave space around the text.

If your tool garbles the words, change the request to "no text" and add the words yourself in a simple editor.

If your platform offers built in thumbnail help, use it. YouTube's help page says Ask Studio can suggest thumbnails based on the video's transcript and themes, and that follow up prompts can change things such as text size. Availability may differ by account.

Part 4: The five point check

Before you upload, answer yes or no to each:

  1. Can I read the words at phone size?
  2. Is every letter right?
  3. Does the video deliver what the cover says?
  4. Is it free of anything that breaks platform rules?
  5. Does it look like my other covers?

YouTube says thumbnails may be rejected, with a strike, if they contain nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence or harmful content, so point 4 is not optional.

Part 5: Export and upload

  • 16:9 for videos, as JPG or PNG. YouTube recommends 3840 x 2160 pixels and a minimum width of 640.
  • Under the size limit: YouTube lists 2 MB for video thumbnails from mobile and 50 MB on desktop.
  • Your account must be verified for custom thumbnails.
  • For Shorts, YouTube recommends a 9:16 ratio, and custom Shorts thumbnails can only be added in Studio on a computer.
  • For Instagram reels, use the cover slider or select an image from your device when you share.

Part 6: The cover log

Add one line per video. Keep it simple:

Date | Video | Words | Version chosen | Note after one week

The first four columns take thirty seconds. The note is for later. After several videos you can look back and see what you tried.

A second filled example

To show the template works outside a trade, here is the same form for an imaginary florist. Again, it is made up.

FieldExample
Video titleHow to keep supermarket roses fresh
The one ideaA small trim and clean water do most of the work
Words on coverRoses that last
ViewerAnyone who buys flowers for the house
Subject and positionVase of roses, left third
Platform and shapeYouTube, 16:9

Notice that the words are three, not six, and that they say the benefit rather than repeating the title. Both are fine. The range of four to six is a guide, and shorter is usually safer when the cover will be seen small.

Using the template with a team

Share the form and the cover rules with anyone who helps you. They fill in the form, you approve it, and then they make the cover. That keeps the idea in your hands.

Questions people ask

Is the template really free?

Yes. Copy it from this page. Any tool you use with it may have its own limits, so check that tool.

Do I fill in the form every time?

The cover rules are filled in once. Only the cover form and the log change per video.

Can I use it for non YouTube covers?

Yes. Change the shape, such as 9:16 for vertical video, and check the platform's own rules.
